Oxycontin is known on the street as “oxycotton,” and when it is used for recreation, it can be highly addictive. Oxycodone is a Schedule II, synthetic opiate analgesic prescribed for moderate to severe pain. OxyContin as a prescribed medication is a very effective and efficient analgesic.

Under prescribed dosage, OxyContin is an effective pain reliever, but when crushed and snorted or injected, the drug produces a quick and powerful "high". It has become a popular drug and its mood altering effects has led to a significant increase in illicit usage.

Oxycontin drug addiction is rampantly on the rise; abuse of this drug began almost from the time it was introduced in the market. Because it is an opiate, “oxycotton” is highly addictive. The health risks for Oxycontin drug addiction are enormous. However, because of its mood altering effects, its unlawful possession may be subject to criminal prosecution.

Non-medical use of oxycontin is relatively high among teenagers. The increased misuse of the drug has led to numerous emergency admissions and even deaths. As the drug is a controlled substance, a prescription is required to obtain it. Other methods of obtaining oxycontin include robbery, fake or stolen prescription, the internet and improper prescribing practices by physicians.

Oxycontin is a central nervous system depressant; its overdose can cause respiratory failure and death. Some symptoms of oxycontin overdose include slow breathing, seizures, dizziness, weakness, coma, confusion, tiredness, cold and clammy skin. Like other opioid narcotics, oxycontin can be fatal at high doses or when combined with other brain depressants such as alcohol.

Sudden stoppage of oxycontin can result in serious withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, anxiety, irritability, vague pain, weakness, abdominal cramps, insomnia, nausea, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, increased blood pressure, increased respiratory rate, increased heart rate, etc. Therefore, to get rid of oxycontin addiction, one must take medical help as its sudden stoppage is also harmful.
